"Town was desolate. I remember there were boarded up places. There was nothing new in town. There was no reason to be in town," he says, looking out his office window. He attributes West Chester's success to a cycle of cooperation between local businesses and the community-coupled together with the police department. First, crime was reduced. Second, a few benchmark businesses came to town. Then, the downtown came alive. West Chester quickly became a destination for 18 figwestchester.com its walkability, top-notch eateries, stylish boutiques, and thriving economic climate. "There was a very different business dynamic just a few years ago," Bohn says. "I would like to think we played a significant role in the evolution and development of the community. In that same time period we were able to reduce crime by 50% while experiencing a great deal of growth." He admits that many communities would like to have the issues that West Chester has, but he looks at them as challenges rather than problems. "I believe strongly in the mission of the police department and certainly in what we do and providing public service. Our public has been very responsive. I'm fond of saying, 'You can't police in a community that does not want to be policed.' We have an extremely engaged public and an informed and educated public," Bohn acknowledges. His giving back comes in the form of responsibility-to promote the health and safety of the residents, visitors, and the business community. And it's a job he takes seriously.
